GILLI AIR - INDONESIA

Gilli Air belongs to an archipelago of three small islands just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia.  For this short part of our travels, we were after a quiet, romantic escape and it met the brief exactly!  With no motorised transport, only bikes and horse-drawn carts (aka cidomo's), this place is such a great escape from the busy, taxi-filled beeping streets of Seminyak, Kuta and the like.  True to its name ('Gilli' in Sasak means "small island"), you can scale the entire island by foot in an hour... great for the calves as there is plenty of soft sand particularly in the less developed northern parts of the island.  If you do venture north, Harmony Cafe is worth a visit purely for its picturesque views and kitschy vibe.  Think cute beach huts and benches with white shells dangling in the wind.

A memorable dinner experience for us was at Scallywags Organic Beach Cafe.  Offering a gourmet menu of delicacies such as seared sesame encrusted tuna, warm goats cheese salad and brandy chilli prawns, Scallywags offered a nice change to the typical Italian and sandwich-type menus of the more local beach bars.  The lovely all-white decor and friendly and pleasant staff set the mood for this trendy but tranquil restaurant.

The Gilli Islands are certainly worth a visit if you are travelling to Bali.  There is something for everyone as each of the 3 islands offer different experiences from partying to romance to untouched nature, making this a destination for all types of travellers.
